Salzburg Cathedral

Because of the enormous size of this cathedral, we needed to work on adding extra rest between notes to allow the echo to dissipate.  You could hear the tiniest sound echo through the building, so a cello end pin slipping or a bow bumping the stand sounded as loud as someone shouting.

We played an orchestral arrangement of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue.  Here I am playing the first few measures of the piece.  The reverberation of sound after the opening notes lasted 2-3 seconds!  It made for quite a powerful performance in which we sounded like a really huge orchestra.

The service

Three clergy members representing the Catholic, Protestant and non-denominational Christian faiths each spoke with the focus on supporting people in poverty and promoting peace.  The Swedish choir sang several hymns and at the conclusion we accompanied them with “Dona Nobis Pacem”.

Musique Sur La Mer Orchestra

Everyone together for one group photo!  The MSLM Youth Symphony Orchestra was founded 10 years ago by Marcy Suddock (our director dressed in white).  Musicians range in age from 11 (Christopher is the youngest member) to 23.  All but 4 of the kids are in either high school or college.  In addition, we have  4 parents and 5 professional musicians who joined us for the tour to fill out various sections.

Directly following the concert at the Salzburg Cathedral, we load the bus and travel to Vienna for dinner and a concert (as the audience, not as performers) at the Wiener Musikverein.  The Musikverein is the one of the premier concert halls in the world and home of the Vienna Philharmonic.

We enjoyed a performance by the Vienna Mozart Orchestra dressed in period costumes.  The music was great and the performance was family friendly with various soloists and audience participation.  We were seated on the edge of the balcony on the right.
